The International Symposium on Islamic Perspectives in Renewable Energy (INSPIRE) 2026 is a landmark interdisciplinary initiative that integrates faith-based ethics with contemporary environmental science. Formulated through a strategic partnership between the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, this symposium serves as a high-level platform for intellectual and practical discourse.

As Malaysia pursues its national target of 70% renewable energy capacity and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the transition necessitates a framework that transcends technical capability to encompass social and ethical integrity. INSPIRE 2026 addresses this by exploring how fundamental Islamic values such as Khalifah (stewardship), Mizan (balance), and Maslahah (public interest), can provide a moral compass for a “Just Transition”. By uniting scholars, industry leaders, and policymakers, the symposium aims to bridge the gap between spiritual principles and sustainable energy practices, ensuring a future that is equitable, innovative, and deeply rooted in shared values.

Objectives

  • The primary goal is to empower interdisciplinary research that integrates Islamic perspectives with sustainable energy development to realize an ethical, innovative, and just energy transition in Malaysia.
  • Strategic goals:
    • Advancing Interdisciplinary Scholarship: To strengthen academic contributions at the intersection of Islamic studies and environmental science, specifically within the renewable energy sector.
    • Cultivating Strategic Partnerships: To establish a robust network of collaboration between academia, the energy industry, and government agencies to drive collective action.
    • Developing Ethical Frameworks: To formulate practical, Shariah-compliant ethical guidelines that inform the development and deployment of sustainable technologies.
    • Driving Shariah-Aligned Innovation: To explore and promote technological advancements in renewable energy that resonate with Islamic principles of sustainability.
    • Ensuring a Just Transition: To design social and economic models that safeguard the welfare of all communities during the shift to green energy.
