YBrs. Ts. Azah Ahmad was appointed as an Authority Member for the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia on 15 May 2025. She brings over 22 years of extensive experience in the renewable energy (RE) sector, specialising in strategic planning, policy development, and implementing renewable energy initiatives. Her proven expertise includes managing large-scale projects, fostering industry collaborations, and advancing human capital development within the RE industry.
Ts. Azah Ahmad previously served as the Senior Director of the Strategic Planning Division at SEDA Malaysia until 2020, having been part of the organisation since its inception in 2011. She was one of the key contributors to the drafting of the Renewable Energy and SEDA Acts in 2011, under the initiative of the then Ministry of Energy, Water, and Communications. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA (1998) and a Master of Science in Energy Technology from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) (2004).
Her career in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector began in 1999 with Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (later known as Greentech Malaysia). She oversaw energy efficiency projects, focusing on building energy initiatives, including energy audits and benchmarking. She represented Malaysia at the ASEAN Energy Efficiency & Sub-sector Network (EE-SSN) and served on SIRIM’s Technical Committee for Performance of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances. In 2005, she was appointed Project Manager for the Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) Project, a government initiative co-funded by UNDP/GEF (2005–2011), where she was responsible for showcase and demonstration components.
During her tenure with SEDA Malaysia, Ts. Azah played a critical role in implementing key programs such as the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Net Energy Metering (NEM), driving renewable energy industry development and supporting human capital growth through the creation of comprehensive training programs. She provided essential technical support and advisory services to government agencies, local institutions, universities, and private sector entities, ensuring compliance with RE project guidelines and procedures. Under her leadership, SEDA Malaysia developed and conducted various training programs, particularly in solar PV, collaborating with local training institutions nationwide. Her contributions significantly advanced Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, integrating sustainable energy technologies into the national framework.
She maintained strong collaborative relationships with numerous agencies and local universities, fostering partnerships in renewable energy initiatives. Ts. Azah was an active member of the PV Working Group Committee under Standards Malaysia, responsible for developing solar PV-related standards in the country. She frequently spoke at seminars and conferences and was invited as a guest lecturer at local and international levels. Additionally, she served as a Board of Study and External Reviewer for Master’s programs specialising in renewable energy at institutions including UM, UTM, UniKL MFI, and UniKL BMI.
At the international level, Ts. Azah served as Chairman of the ASEAN Energy Awards’ Renewable Energy category since 2012 and represented Malaysia as the ASEAN Renewable Energy Sub-sector Network (RE-SSN) focal point. She also represented Malaysia at the APEC Experts Group on New and Renewable Energy Technologies (EGNRET). Following her departure from SEDA Malaysia, she continued to serve as Chairman of the National Energy Awards (NEA) – Renewable Energy Category until 2023, recognising excellence among Malaysia’s energy industry leaders. In 2020, she was honoured at the ASEAN level with the ASEAN Excellence in Energy Management (Individual) award.
